Antique Georgian Portrait Miniature Gold French Brooch Frame

About the Item

A stunning miniature portrait with breathtaking artistry and a fine 18k gold mount, this young woman comes to us from France and is either backed by or painted directly on a mother of pearl wafer (visible from backside). This is something done to add an extra lustre to the portrait, and we do see it in some of the early French paintings. This lovely woman with the Mona Lisa smile and sultry hauntingly beautiful large eyes is decked out in fabulous pearls. You see the detail of her French Empire pearl tiara at the crown of her head, her stunning choker necklace and earrings of fine pearls. The gown has a delicate trim of lace, almost crisp to the touch, it is so lifelike. With such fine portraiture, we know this was done by a very adept artist, though I can't see a visible signature. We did not try to open this painting, so perhaps there is a signature neatly penned on the outer rim, or on backside. But none is visible while she's in her frame. The frame is 18k yellow gold, tested and guaranteed. Dating c. 1790-1820, She is magnificent after her 200 or so years, isn't she! We bought this in companionship with a similarly painted miniature of a beautiful young French gentleman, and suspect they are the couple's wedding portraits. They are being sold separately. Look for his portrait, which has been signed by the artist (though undecipherable) and dated 1811. If they were a couple, we have a defined date for the commissioned paintings. Again, they are sold separately. Very good to excellent condition, no chips or cracks or hairlines on the painted wafer. Perhaps a very slight bend to the outer flare of her 18k gold brooch mount, but nothing that stands out. Certainly a superb artist's rendition of an elite member of French heritage, and a lingering treasure of museum quality.

Excellent condition for age and type. Slightest bends to outer flare of the gold mount, easily straightened, no losses, no damage. Painting is superb.
