American Victorian Maria Judson Strean Portrait Miniature Pendant in 15K Gold
About the Item
Presenting this beautiful and rare watercolor portrait by one of America's foremost female miniature portrait artists, Maria Judson Strean (1865–1949).
This never before seen piece of artwork was painted when Strean was only 33 years old, and could be one of her earliest known commercial portraits.
The subject is an unknown young female painted in light pastels in a refined manner with the lightness and freedom that only youth can inspire. A pretty pale-pink slightly off the shoulder dress matches her skin tone perfectly. Her hair is set in a slightly-tousled, loose high bun, foregoing the formality that an adult might portray.
The portrait itself is still vibrant and has been well looked after over the past 122 years. Out of the frame, it measures 2.73 inches by 2.10 inches, and it is still mounted with glue on the original card stock. There are a few tiny nibbles on the top and bottom edges which are concealed by the frame. The bottom right hand corner bears the artist's signature of MJ Strean.
We X-Ray tested the frame, and the majority is 15+ karat gold. There are a few areas that test 14.5 karat, which is not unusual for the Victorian period.
Everything is original on this piece, the glass is typical Victorian, slightly beveled, with no chips, cracks or scuffs.
On the rear of the frame it has the initials JSL and the date of June 4th 1898.
MJ Strean's artwork is in all the major museum collections; The Met, Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Gallery of Art and many more throughout the world. These very seldomly come up for sale, and when they do, they almost always have lost their original frame.
