Men’s William Lyons Black Fine Felt Bowler Hat – size 7 1/8, 1920s
Located in Tucson, AZ
A mainstay for both noblemen and commoners, the bowler was the chosen headwear of outlaws, bankers, Prime Ministers and vaudevillians because its low crown kept it from being knocked off the head in high winds and its rigidity withstood being misshapen when stomped. Made in Massachusetts, this one was likely worn with pinstripe trousers, a Crombie coat and a turned walking stick. Vintage bliss...

Rare Paul Poiret Braided Yarn and Silk Tulle Toque
Located in New York, NY
Rare and historical fashion artifact from the house of Paul Poiret and the personal wardrobe of Denise Boulet Poiret. Paul Poiret is known as one of the innovators of 20th Century Haute Couture in Paris. Poiret established his own house in 1903, and made his name with the controversial kimono coat.He designed flamboyant window displays and threw legendary parties to draw attention to his work; his instinct for marketing and branding was unmatched by any previous designer. Poiret's house expanded to encompass furniture, decor, and fragrance in addition to clothing. In 1911, he established the company Parfums de Rosine, named for his eldest daughter. Poiret's name was never linked to the company, but it was effectively the first fragrance ever launched by a designer. Denise Poiret was mother, model and muse to the fantastical larger than life figure who revolutionized Parisian fashion in the early parts of the 20th Century. This hat was part of Denise Poirets personal wardrobe and is an example of Poirets chic and restrained day wear. Denise Poiret became known for wearing these simple turban-like hats and head treatments throughout social Paris which brought increased notariety to her husband's work. Madeleine Panizon was initally employed as a designer for Martine (Poiret's decorative Art Branch) and ultimately became the milliner for the house of Poiret...

Early 20th Century French Art Deco Hats

Vintage and Designer Hats

The right vintage or designer hat can transform a look. This humble accessory is your reliable pièce de résistance, boosting confidence and lending an air of sophistication to any ensemble.

Functional and a widely renowned, versatile finishing touch when heading out for a night on the town, hats have long been a part of the history of fashion. Wealthy Egyptians, for example, wore hats to keep them cool in the blazing sun.

In the early 1800s, the wide-brimmed bonnets that women wore became increasingly elaborate. The brims broadened and many were embellished with colorful floral decorations. Legendary fashion designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s career began in millinery, a term that stems from Milan, Italy, as it was the city best known for producing quality hats during the 16th century. That was before she would set the fashion world alight with comfortable and practical jackets and skirts, encouraging women to leave extravagant clothes behind. Halston, who defined the spare, body-conscious style of the so-called Studio 54 era, was the hat designer for Bergdorf Goodman when he first moved to New York City. He had his first encounter with fame in 1961 when Jackie Kennedy wore a pillbox hat he designed.

From fascinators at a prestigious derby to a baseball cap for a walk in the park, there’s a hat for every occasion. When shopping for the right hat, you’ll want to pick one you feel confident in. Think about size too — you don’t want a wide-brimmed headpiece that will hog the spotlight on every occasion (or maybe you do). If you’ve got a petite face, an oversize hat might be too overbearing.

On 1stDibs find an expansive assortment of vintage and designer hats today. You can search for hats by style, designer or color.
