Early 20th Century Red Bead & Sequin Central Asian Hat
About the Item
Early 20th Century Central Asian hat, possibly Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan, with an intricate geometric pattern of ruby red sequins and beads accented by crystals on silk. The interior is lined with a quilted floral printed cotton. From the estate and private collection of Peggy Slappey, a well traveled lady who passionately collected textile art from Central Asia. This hat was part of a 2016 exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art which displayed textiles from Ms. Slappey's extensive collection. The hat is pictured on page 73 of the catalog which is included. CONDITION
Very good antique condition with some missing beads and exposed threads though nothing objectionable.
MEASUREMENTS
The hat has a rounded square shape and is intended to rest at the top of the head similar to the Western 'pillbox' hat. The inside rim measures 20.5” circumference. The rimless brim has a 2.25” rise with 5.5” to the center. Overall, when looking at the top of the hat, it measures approximately a 6" square.
