Gallenga Apricot Panne Velvet Fortuny Fringe Shawl Gallenga Estate Rare!

About the Item

A rare stunning rich apricot panne velvet Gallenga fringed shawl circa 1920's. The textile art of Maria Monaci Gallenga is often compared to that of Mariano Fortuny because they both produced hand-stenciled designs that drew inspiration from the distant past. Gallenga became the mentor of the Italian Futurists. In 1925 she exhibited in the Italian Pavilion at the Art Deco Exposition, winning the Grand Prix for stenciled textiles. While Fortuny was the noted artist/designer at that time .... Gallenga's achievement was remarkable! PROVENANCE: purchased from Gallenga estate in Venezia. Color of shawl is amazing and one rarely sees this shade in a Gallenga. The velvet is rich and soft and quite luxurious. Even more amazing in person! It is more of an apricot as opposed to orange and the long silk fringe contrast a bit deeper apricot. The motif appears to be mythological creatures hand painted in shades of antique goldish bronze, silver with a subtle metallic sparkle. As in all Gallenga's work the shawl is all hand made and painted. measures: approx 57" x 58" including the 19-20" fringe. quite large and would look lovely worn with a Fortuny Delphos. Often used as bed or settee coverings as well as, magnificent one-of-a-kind wall hangings. Condition: very good, a new silk lining professionally added; tiny hole in velvet not obvious and does not distract from the beauty of the shawl
