This deep brown faux fur coat that is done to give the appearance of an 'Astrakhan' fur is a very rare piece indeed. It is also an early example of what would go on to become one of Alaia's most iconic coat silhouettes with its over-sized shawl collar and nipped in waist. The exaggerated narrowing of the waist is made even more so by the curving line of the hip that flares out dramatically. At the back this hip line is even more dramatic with a vent and extra curving panels that give it an almost bustle appearance. The buttons close down the center but I am almost certain this is meant to overlap and close along one side. I think the buttons were moved to add some extra room for the previous owner. You could easily move them back over again for an even more fitted and sculpted silhouette. This is an early foray by a high end designer into attempting to find a substitute for real fur and so has historical importance from that perspective as well. Excellent condition Fully lined in a silky satin and closes at the front with buttons. Please read notes about their placement above. If they are moved it would reduce the waist accordingly (you could probably get it down anywhere form 1-4" if needed). The fur seems to be attached with a combination of glue and stitching - there are small areas where you do see the glue and under-fabric but this is the mature of the piece as it would have been all done by hand and should not be considered a fault.
