1920s Art Deco Silk Devoré Chevron Burnout Velvet Flapper Dress

About

This striking Chinese design has been rendered to silk using the devoré method popularized in the 1920s. A silk ribbon belt draws the drop waist together while also lengthening the torso. A simple yet beautiful design to showcase the luxurious textile. This is a stunning velvet gown from the 1920s. In a warm palette of deep cream and rich chocolate brown, the velvet is luxurious and soft. The bottom third of the dress is a panel with solid pile: that is, traditional smooth velvet with its characteristic deep colour and subtle sheen. Above this, the velvet is voided down to the cream ground-weave in an incredible and complex geometric pattern of zig-zags, florals, and abstract lines. Voided velvet is a beautiful historical fabric used infrequently by modern designers, and it is used to beautiful effect on this gown. It creates a striking difference between the bottom panel and the upper part of the dress while still affecting perfect harmony between the colours and textures of the two parts, because the pile of the velvet is continuous and identical. The sumptuous fabric is balanced by the simplicity of the drop-waisted silhouette and the economy of volume in the skirt. The only other nod to luxury is a wide satin ribbon which draws in around the hips, disappearing into a channel in the velvet on the left side beneath a simple ribbon rosette. This dress exudes both luxury and elegance, with its perfect balance between sumptuousness and simplicity. With flattering colours and a comfortable, easy-to-wear silhouette, it will make the perfect dress for any occasion it graces.
