1985 AZZEDINE ALAIA off-white linen dress with elasticized waist & cut out back

About the Item

A very rare off-white linen dress designed by Azzedine Alaia dating to spring 1985. This dress is cut with his characteristic focus on the body. The silhouette is clean and close through the skirt, falling to the knee, with a high, elasticized waist that creates a strong, sculpted line. The top contrasts this with a softer, more relaxed shape. It is slightly blouson, with a wide neckline and full sleeves that taper at the wrist. From the front it reads as understated, but the back reveals a curved cut-out that exposes the mid-back, giving the piece a sharper, more deliberate edge. The linen has a subtle texture that keeps the black from feeling flat, and the construction is typical of Alaia at this time—precise, but never stiff, designed to move with the body. This exact design is held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute which speaks to how important this moment was in his early work. There is no size label on this dress although it best fits an XS or S. The material is a linen knit and there is some give to it. Approximate measurements: drop shoulder 20", bust is open due to cut-out back, waist 24" (elastic stretches), hips 34" (stretches), arm length from drop shoulder seam 18" and overall length 44". Slips on over the head. Made in Italy. Very good condition.
