Caterina Gatta

Each fabric has its own story to tell, says Caterina Gatta of the unused bolts of fabulously ornate late 80's and 90's silks from the likes of Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, and Gianni Versace that she then recycles into the kind of slip-on-and-you-are-good-to-go dresses, blouses, and skirts that let the fabrics do all the talking. I like to be respectful to the designers, Gatta says, but I also don't want to refer to what they did with them. The 27-year-old Roman started out in 2008 when she came across a length of fuchsia geometric-print plisse silk by Irene Galitzine-One of the most important designers during the La Dolce Vita period, she explains helpfully-and whipped it up into a dress for herself, and before long, others wanted something new from something old , too. And while she will happily chat about her vintage-collecting bug(she bought a late-seventies YSL green evening dress from a Roman market), Gatta is rather more secretive about where she gets those treasured fabrics. That's understandable. She'll often only be able to source at most about 30 yards, enough for 10 dresses. The past might speak, but it can't shout. Mark Holgate Vogue May 2011
