Norman Norell Skirt Jacket and Silk Polka Dot Bow Blouse Suit, 1960s Provenance

About the Item

This vintage 1960's Norman Norell suit is from a a woman who belonged to a prominent Northwest fashion family. The suit includes a sleeveless black and beige silk blouse with a bow, a straight black wool skirt with silk lining, a tan jacket trimmed in black and a black belt. The shorter style double breasted jacket has a weighted hem and front pockets. The blouse has a double row of fabric covered buttons, an elastic waistband inside snaps and hooks and eyes. The skirt closes with a zipper and two hooks and eyes and is fully lined. The lining is one of the elements of Norell clothing that is so exceptional, that you can always recognize his pieces. His tailoring skills were impeccable and this is a great example of his talent for fitting garments for his customers. We estimate this would best fit a modern size 4/6. Her granddaughters provided this small glimpse into their family's fashion history. The Meier Family, Schwartz Family and Sadowsky Family were very prominent members of the fashion industry for 150 years. Reuben Sadowsky was a real estate and garment tycoon in the 19th century, having erected the Sadowsky Building at 1372 Broadway in New York City,, the first manufacturing site in “Garment Town”. Many of the Norell pieces that we are listing on 1stdibs, including this one, were originally designed for Reuben’s only daughter, Betty Sadowsky Schwartz of New York City. Betty Sadowsky married Harry Schwartz, who owned National Department Stores. Harry Schwartz (Betty’s husband) was a close college friend of Oscar Hammerstein and Harry was actually in Hammerstein’s wedding. So, Betty and Harry Schwartz would often attend openings of the Rogers & Hammerstein plays, among them “Away We Go” which later was re-titled and is now known as “Oklahoma”. Betty's granddaughter told us that several of the evening gowns we are selling were worn at events hosted by Rogers & Hammerstein. Because Betty’s husband owned National Department Stores, the Schwartz family would regularly visit their stores around the country. Among the stores in the National Department Store chain was Lipman Wolfe & Company, which was located in the building across from Meier & Frank’s flagship store. On one of the Schwartz’s visits to Portland, they brought their daughter, met, fell in love with and eventually married, a descendant of the Meier & Frank Company. Meier & Frank was a prominent chain of department stores founded in Portland and later bought by the May Department Stores Company (Macy’s). Meier & Frank operated in the Pacific Northwest from 1857 to 2006. Betty's daughter's marriage merged two great fashion families! Betty's granddaughters remember traveling to New York througout the years with their mother and grandmother to see Norman Norell's newest collections and to have Mr. Norell fit the two women personally!
