About the Item
An incredibly rare and absolutely gorgeous Edward Molyneux luxurious sapphire blue silk velvet bias-cut gown dating back to his 1929-30 fall/winter haute couture collection. After a period working for the British fashion designer Lucile, Molyneux opened his fashion house in Paris and became known for his "never too rich or too thin" idle. He firmly believed in simplicity; subtle in color and perfect in cut. Molyneux dressed the likes of Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Margaret Leighton, and Vivien Leigh. His followers included Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain.
This exceptional beauty is fashioned in the highest quality mid-weight sapphire blue silk velvet which feels incredible against the skin. I love the dramatic asymmetric winged shoulder drape and large-scale side sash. The bias-cut design has complex couture pattern work insanely hard to do. Extravagant garments from this era remain a perennial favorite, perhaps because no other time period combined such opulence with such effortless elegance. This 1929-30 fall/winter Molyneux haute couture dress is in beautiful condition with no stains, alternations or holes. Slips on over the head with no additional closures. Incredible hand-stitching throughout. Only signs of age are a few minor surface abrasions throughout and one small repair by the back top center. Please message for detailed pictures.
