1970 Christian Dior Haute-Couture Ombre Chiffon & Velvet Billow-Sleeve Ensemble

The House of Dior has been an enduring icon of Haute-Couture. While the House of Dior is still a thriving business today, Dior's untimely death in 1957 left the fashion world without a great dictator of style. Christian Dior designed under his own name for only a decade, but his influence is everlasting. When the talented Marc Bohan took over as head designer in 1960, he continued the Dior tradition of elegant design. This beautiful three-piece ensemble, which was featured in the 1970 Fall/Winter collection, is a perfect example of his talent. The fabrics used for this garment are breathtaking; charcoal grey ombre silk-chiffon and luxurious smoky silk-velvet. The seductive low-cut plunge billow-sleeve blouse has a built-in camisole structure and matching draped-side sash belt. I love the nod to 1930's film-noir glamour! The nipped waist a-line construction emphasizes a woman's seductive shape without adding any bulk or volume to the actual hips. As Dior once said, "Elegance must be the right combination of distinction, naturalness, care and simplicity." This couture treasure is a wonderful mix of these elements!
