About

Koos Van den Akker, who recently passed away, started off his career as an apprenticeship at Christian Dior in the late 1950s. This early exposure to Haute Couture shows in pieces like this even if his career is more well known for his patchwork and collage pieces. In and amongst those 80s eye-catchers were sublime little beaded works of art. They are perhaps the hardest of his work to find - I think women still hoard them - and when you do they take your breathe away. His work always started form the fabric and the fabric on this dress is a showstopper. The base is a light, fine net lace that is a deep red and black combination. Onto this are thousands and thousands of tiny black sequins hand sewn to follow the pattern of the lace and give the dress a subtle glimmer. The red portions are tiny seed beads, again hand applied by the thousands to the lace net below. It is fitted, short and sits off the shoulder. Underneath is a layer of fine black silk that covers the torso but leaves the tops of the shoulders and sleeves semi-transparent as well as a deep V in the back. It is divine and if you even remotely love it in the photos you will squeal when you see it in person. Very fine workmanship and truly exquisite. Excellent condition
