Arnold Scassi, born Arnold Isaacs to a Montreal-based Jewish family, was inspired by his glamorous Aunt, and developed a passion for fashion at an early age. Scaasi enrolled in the Cotnoir-Capponi school in Montreal, and spent his senior year at the Chambre Syndicale in Paris, after which he apprenticed at the house of Paquin, and then later applied for a job with Christian Dior. Dior took his time responding to Scassi. Scassi, who was impatient and ready to work, moved to New York, where he worked under Charles James for some time, before setting out on his own in 1956. Hoping to adopt some Italian flair, Arnold Isaacs took is last name, and reversed it, turning “Isaacs” into “Scaasi.” In 1958, two years after launching his company, Scaasi won the Coty Award for Greatest Achievement in Creative Design by an American, a pivotal success in his career.

Scassi opened a couture salon and made it his goal to dress socialites, celebrities, and other members of the elite, including Joan Crawford, Claudette Colbert, Sophia Loren, and Natalie Wood. His most memorable designs were meant for the ballroom, although he did create a couple ready-to-wear lines, as well as design accessories, menswear, and perfume. The backbone of his business were wealthy clients with busy social calendars. Scassi designed film costumes for Shirley MacLaine, Susan Sarandon, Sally Field, and also designed the infamous sheer ensemble Barbara Streisand wore to the 1968 Academy Awards.

In 1996 Scaasi was presented with the Council of Fashion Designers of America Lifetime Achievement Award. Scassi has had numerous museum retrospectives, and his designs sit in numerous museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, the Grand Rapids Public Museum, and the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History in Boynton Beach, Florida.
