1990 YOHJI YAMAMOTO black asymmetrically seamed hoop dress

About the Item

This phenomenal dress by Yohji Yamamoto, dating to 1990, is made from a jet-black, densely woven tropical-weight wool gabardine. It’s the kind of piece that usually only shows up in museum collections — and variations of it are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Kyoto Costume Institute, and it was also included in the 2011 Yohji Yamamoto exhibition at the V&A in London. The top is simple, with a clean wide neckline and a fitted bodice, while the skirt has four built-in hoops that form those rounded, three-dimensional tiered waves. The shape gives it that sculptural, slightly off-kilter look Yamamoto was experimenting with at the time. Even though it’s a black dress, the structure makes it feel extremely special. Labeled a size S, although it best fits an XS or S. Approximate measurements: (unstretched) bust 32-32.5", waist 27", hips open and length 37-44". Dress zips up the center back. There is no fabric content label present but it is made of a densely woven tropical weight wool. Hoops are pliable so it is comfortable to wear. Made in France. Very good condition.
