About the Item

When wartime rationing abbreviated garment lengths, brides used intricate seams and sharp tailoring to create interest in favor of volume. This shimmering example incorporates a scalloped waist seam and military shoulders to create a simple but striking gown emblematic of its time. Ivory wedding gown with squared sweetheart neckline, scalloped drop waist seam and pointed bracelet sleeves with inside elbow tucks; lightly padded and puffed shoulders. Princess seams at front and rear bodice. Ankle length front hemline and sweep train; left metal zipper closure. Bodice lined in white muslin. fabric: slipper satin, cotton muslin noteworthy: dry clean only alterations: none condition: very good with one 3 ½” scuff on satin finish at left front hip and extremely light wear on bottom 2” of sweep train; scattered (very faint) marks at hemline measurements: neckline opening: 5 ¾” across at shoulders, 6 ½” across at widest point neckline drop: 4 ½” shoulders: 14 ½” sleeve: 23” from shoulder to wrist point; 15 ½” from underarm to inside wrist sleeve circumference: 13” at upper arm, 8” at wrist bust: 38” waist: 28” bodice length: 20 ½” from shoulder to drop waist seam hips: 48” skirt length: 32” from waist seam in front, 37” at rear total length: 52 ½” from shoulder in front, 57 ½” from shoulder at rear sweep: 163” hem: ½” label: no label present size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size medium
