Rare 1969 Zandra Rhodes Ivory and Green Silk Tunic - Sold As Is

About the Item

A beautiful and rare Zandra Rhodes ivory and green printed silk tunic with dramatic full-length sleeves from her 1969 debut collection ‘The Knitted Circle’. This collector’s item is constructed from lightweight diaphanous silk with an intricate ivory, green and black printed pattern and features an oversized hood on the back and a V-neckline with a necktie closure which forms a keyhole effect when fastened. The dramatic full-length voluminous batwing sleeves feature elasticated fitted wrist cuffs and the mid-calf length tunic features an asymmetric hem with a black trim. The chiffon in the tunic is badly damaged, with some staining and extensive tearing all over, particularly to the hem, hood and sleeves. The printed chain stitch textile design of Zandra’s debut collection was inspired by her childhood love of knitting and by the knitted bedspreads and embroidered chain stitch bed hangings she saw at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. With the help of a letter of introduction from American Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Diana Vreeland, Rhodes’s debut collection was modelled by American actress Natalie Wood in the pages of the magazine. The entire collection was bought by high-end New York department store Henri Bendel and featured in a number of other prestigious fashion publications. This garment has been Ozone treated, and despite the extensive damage which may compromise wearability, it remains a highly collectible museum-worthy piece. More images upon request. --- Provenance: Miranda Macmillan (née Quarry) - The Countess of Stockton Born in 1947, Miranda Louise Quarry is the stepdaughter of Lord Mancroft. A rebel by nature, Miranda blazed a nonconformist trail through a series of boarding schools and by her late teens, on the advice of a psychiatrist, she left schooling permanently and travelled to Barcelona, which marked the beginning of her peripatetic life. During her travels around Europe in the 60s, she fully embraced the worlds of art, dance, fashion and music. It was during this time that she met her first husband, the late great comedic acting legend Peter Sellers. Although a brief marriage (1971-1974), she has always maintained fond memories of her time with him stating that, ‘It was a privilege to have spent as much time as I did with Peter. He was one of the kindest and most generous people who ever walked this earth’. Miranda began to build her extensive collection of couture garments during her marriage to Sellers, purchasing couture from historic Parisian houses such as Dior and Givenchy as well as from the British designers of the moment, including Ossie Clark and Zandra Rhodes.
