Stephen Burrows Ensemble From The Battle of Versailles

About

1973, the year when American fashion stole the stage from the French couturiers right off their own stage at The Battle of Versailles. Yves Saint Laurent himself came backstage after the show and told Steven his dresses were the best. Decades later this ensemble was showcased at the Museum of The City of New York exhibit "When Fashion Danced". The wrap top with attached sash which can be worn over either shoulder or even as a halter. The skirt is constructed from seven layers of chiffon, tiered in three colours. The skirt kicks out at one side with a godet in the black tier for added movement and sway. We've dressed our mannequin lining up the side seams of the skirt with the side seams of the top, this drapes the skirt at a different angle than is shown in the exhibit photos. The skirt has an elastic waist and the top is a wrap so this piece is entirely adjustable to numerous sizes. Unfortunately there is no label as the waist elastic was redone at some point and it has gone missing. Undoubtedly though this is the same ensemble shown in the exhibit.
