Vivienne Westwood 1998 CorsetStyle MarilynMonroe Velvet Moire Red CocktailDress

About the Item

Vivienne Westwood (1941-2022) designed this corset-style hourglass-shaped red velvet evening cocktail dress with its outsized double bow and sheer moire faux-underlay while producing her "Dressed To Scale" collection in 1998 with then-decade-long protege Andreas Kronthaler. A design from this collection set a Westwood-clothing auction record at Christie's London when a corseted silk gown fetched over $41,000. This fresh interpretation of the classic Marilyn-Monroe silhouette was dubbed the "MM Corset Dress" for Westwood's semi-couture Gold Label, while it can still be made-to-measure as a bespoke dress (see photo of model wearing version as a white wedding gown). Marking a turning point in Westwood's fashion career, this ready-to-wear dress was notably purchased at her Conduit Street boutique in London during the upscale Mayfair shop's inaugural year, when it was among the first garments tagged with the Red Label, which was comparatively made in Italy. Referencing Westwood's British punk-rock roots, the neckline and sleeve hems are hand cut. At her fashion shows, Westwood sometimes cut and ripped colored hosiery for her models, which suggests that she or Andreas did so for this particular dress that could have debuted on the runway or at the opening party for the store. Exemplifying Westwood's sexy, yet playful, reinterpretation of historical fashion, the dress boldly exaggerates the decolletage with her sculptural double bow, which tops the corset-like low wide neckline. Its weight and the angled shoulder-straps are cleverly supported by a mock underlay of moire that ends at the elbows. Above the invisible zip at the back center, the moire stretches into a keyhole shape when fastened by hook and eye at the neck. The curves and volume of the bow are echoed on the tight dress by the flounce hem that creates soft pleats below the bodice. In very good condition, the cotton-blend velvet and stretch moire mid-length cocktail dress is tagged Italian-size 40, but it runs larger like a French 40 or a US 6. Museum curators worldwide consider Westwood the most influential British fashion designer of the 20th Century given the profound effect of her decades of shaping fashion and music style since 1971. Solo exhibitions of the British dame's work continue to be mounted far and wide since significant retrospectives by NYC's The Museum At FIT in 2011 and London's V&A Museum in 2004 when it was the largest ever devoted to a living English fashion designer.
