A Worth Historicism French Day Dress in Chiné Taffeta Circa 1900

Worth Haute Couture day dress from the Belle Epoque. Historicism dress of Revolutionary or Directoire style in two parts, bodice and skirt supported by a bustle. Background in chiné black taffeta with rinceau of sky-blue, pink and green thistles, and with fine vertical stripes alternating black ribs and cream "skin of giraffe" decor. Boned bodice with an inner belt in fluted satin, woven label mentioning Worth Paris. In reference to the Incroyables et Merveilleuses from 1800, the bodice borrows the cut of the tailcoat of the French Period Directoire, collar with large revers, fitted in the back by a pet-en-l'air, stovepipe sleeves, flared and pointed cuffs covering hands. The open bust reveals a fake rigid body in window-dressing of cream satin adorned with black cotton lace. The skirt with wide oblique cut sides still allows a generous volume setting especially thanks to a small twisted and rigid steel bustle placed on the bottom of the kidneys (not part of this sale). Label white background gray graphic Paris J Worth Paris. Some damages on the black lace front has to be fixed . The chiné silk is very strong. Very good condition of color and conservation.
