A taffeta brocaded silk blue à la Française Dress - France Circa 1780

Located in Toulon, FR

Circa 1780. France A blue brocade taffeta A la française dress, consisting of a coat and skirt, typical of French fashion under Louis XVI around 1780. Coat with Watteau pleats at the back, open at the front to reveal a stomacher and small three-quarter-length pagoda sleeves with two flounces. Very fine blue Nattier silk taffeta with a design of cascading garlands of flowers. Wavy, puffed, pleated and crenellated flounces, particularly on the sleeves, on the front of the coat and on the skirt with four rows of flounces. Original unbleached linen lining on the bodice, the rest of the coat being partially lined with absinthe green silk taffeta and cream chintz. The skirt waistline was altered in the 20th century to allow for reuse. Note that the taffeta has been reinforced by a professional workshop, particularly on the shoulders and at the bottom of the train, and that there are some very slight weaknesses in the silk, which do not affect its stability or appearance. Good overall condition. The rigid white whalebone bodice is not included in this sale. Dimensions: Modelled on a size 36 French dress form...

Round gown in pink taffeta silk with mittened sleeves -French Circa 1795

Round gown in pink taffeta silk with mittened sleeves -French Circa 1795

Located in Toulon, FR

Circa 1792-1795 France High-waisted Round Gown in salmon pink silk with geometric semis dating from the First French Republic. Bustier with large oval neckline finely tightened at the bust by original sliding ties. Long, angled sleeves with mittened ends. Round skirt with large organ-pipe pleats behind, emphasising the V-shaped cut-out at the back of the bustier. Unbleached linen bodice lining with inner tie corset. No lining for the skirt, which has a very large bottom and several pleats at the bottom. The silk with its changing tones has no major flaws apart from a few yellowish halos and some period repairs. Stable condition, collectible only. A very rare piece. Size: Small size corresponding to a 34 France today. This latest example of a pyramid-shaped dress from the very end of the 18th century has its origins in the flounced dresses of the Louis XV period. Here, the hollow pleats in the back are still very high up and represent the last reminiscence of the Watteau-style pleats of the Robes à la française...
