About the Item
A very fine and original Mexican Chiapas skirt hand embroidered in the 1940s. Part of the typical dancing costume of the Chiapas region in southern Mexico during this era, this weighty piece would have been paired with a coordinating blouse. Tailored from inky black net, it has a tiered construction and features exquisite hand embroidery all over in rainbow hues. The embroidery is detailed with vivacious flowers in rose pink, cobalt blue, tangerine and fuchsia. The vines that they are sat among are resplendent in pale mint green, yellow and cream. A wonderful, highly collectable example of traditional craftsmanship, it fastens at the waist with two small black hook-and-eyes and large silver-toned hook-and-eye clasp. The skirt is lined with black satin throughout. It has no labels.
This flamboyant skirt is in very good to excellent vintage condition and would make a great pairing with other highly embellished, crocheted items and leather for a maximalist vibe. It is one of the finest and oldest examples we have ever had at Circa. On inspection, there is slight colour fade to the inside of the satin on the waistband, not visible when worn. We have restored the waist hooks back to what we believe was the original size of the skirt so it will currently fit around a UK size 14 or US 10. The hooks were placed at 27 in. so there is plenty of flexibility to make this smaller by adjusting the waistband.
