About

This is an incredible patchwork-embroidered skirt by Elinor Simmons for Malcolm Starr. The bronze-hued sheer background is heavily embellished in a gridwork of 'tiles' in gold, red, green, and purple, and finished by a gold border at the hem and a green silk waistband. The skirt is A-line, sitting at the natural waist and falling to the ankles in gentle flutes. The embellishment is done in plied yarns, layered sequins, glass beads, and metal baubles for a highly complex and textured appearance. Each square has a different geometric basis: circles, stripes, diamonds, diagonals, or concentric squares. These are arranged in a repeating three-line order for a varied yet organized effect. The embroidery is beautifully executed, and the layering of the sequins to form different shapes and effects shows the effort and care taken with this garment. The colours will flatter any complexion, and the shape is a classic silhouette. This skirt is a striking and jewel-like garment, and is a perfect statement-piece. Fantastic fully beaded and embroidered maxi-skirt from the 1960s.
