Comme des Garçons
Comme des Garçons is one of the world’s most innovative and trailblazing fashion brands, helmed by its inimitable founder, Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo (b. 1942), who has a penchant for breaking fashion and cultural norms. The only living designer apart from Yves Saint Laurent to have a retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, Kawakubo has permanently changed fashion with designs that challenge traditional ideas of beauty with a creative and transgressive exuberance.
After studying art and literature at Keio University in Tokyo, Kawakubo worked as a freelance stylist before establishing her own label in 1973, opening her first store in Tokyo in 1975. Kawakubo has since been instrumental in pioneering many concepts now familiar in contemporary fashion. One of her most iconic moves was her introduction of androgynous styles (Comme des Garçons means “like the boys” in French) with asymmetrical, twisted silhouettes that envelope the body. While she told the New York Times that the “basics of clothing lie in men’s fashion,” Kawakubo believes in the concept of humanness in clothes, such as titling her spring 1995 show “Transcending Gender.” In the 1970s, when color-blocking was the norm, Kawakubo stuck to her monochromatic color palette dominated by shades of black with uncompromising dedication, although with evocative and powerful use of red and white.
Comme des Garçons is also known for an often shocking take on fashion. Deconstructed tailoring, violently slashed fabric and sculptural shapes are some themes that run through the brand’s collections, but Kawakubo never explains the meaning of her conceptual pieces, which fall somewhere between art and fashion. Even though the brand has more commercial offshoots like PLAY, known by the iconic heart motif with eyes, the premier men’s line Homme Plus and the multilabel Dover Street Market that opened in 2004, the essence of Comme des Garçons remains Kawakubo’s otherworldly and undefinable creations, which are impossible to ignore.

- Mod Purple and White Polka Dot Maxi Wrap Skirt, 1970sLocated in Boca Raton, FLThe Mod style is one of the most iconic fashion eras. Rising in the late 1950s to 1960s, the Mod style grew out of the rising British youth culture and were characterized by juvenile silhouettes, and soft coordinated colors. The Mod style is emblematic of an easy cool and a carefree lifestyle. This midi length jersey wrap skirt features a polka-dot print of lavender, lilac, and royal purple dots trimmed in white on a black ground. The chunky dot shapes are reminiscent of the headlights on the iconic Mod Vespa motor scooters that likely inspired this 1970s design. The skirt along the front, and at the waistband is bordered in a royal purple that provides necessary balance as the dot pattern snakes across the skirt in a dynamic diagonal route. Additionally, the wild print is made more extreme by the waist pleats that impart an additional layer of undulation to the design. With a rather straight silhouette, this skirt mixes classic lines with a vibrant monochromatic print. Size estimate: XS/S Measurements: Waist: 24 inches Hips: 36 inches Length: 35.5 inches Made of smooth poly jersey and lined in a purple poly crepe, this skirt is a fun, classic, and quirky vintage style. Through the hips it has a traditional pencil skirt fit that flares slightly as it goes to the hem. On the waistband, the skirt can be fitted and adjusted with hidden snaps and a two-toned mauve and crème coloured button. This unlabelled vintage wrap skirt...Category

- Dries Van Noten Sheer Silk Printed Pleated Skirt, Runway 2008By Dries van NotenLocated in Boca Raton, FLA remarkable talent of 21st century design, Dries Van Noten quickly captivated the world of fashion with his equally wearable and conceptual garments. Opening his Paris boutique in 2007 and then recognized by CFDA in 2008, Van Noten’s Fall 2008 collection stands as a monument to the designer’s growing acclaim. Implementing his signature abstract florals and unique color stories, the collection gave a psychedelic ethnic mood that is encompassed in this pleated, sheer, silk skirt. Sitting promptly at the waist with an austere black waist band, the delicate skirt is a sensory explosion of colors featuring tones of yellow ochre, mauve, red, and blue-green. The print rhythmically moves with the pleats slightly accentuating the hips as it moves into the dynamic, calf-length handkerchief hem. A vintage aura adds a particular charm to the seemingly futuristic print...Category
