1960s Emilio Pucci Pink, Green, White Terry Cloth Velvet Playsuit & Bag Set

About the Item

Pucci terry cloth pieces were designed for the beach and reflect the jet set life style that Emilio Pucci and his clients often lived within the 1960s and 1970s. This fabulous vibrant coloured playsuit and matching handbag set is particularly rare. I would say a once-in-a-lifetime find! The playsuit is made out of a terry cloth, toweling velvet and is an all in one piece with built in shorts and three-quarter-length sleeves. It features one of his fantastic geometric signature prints in brilliant pinks, greens, yellow and red on a white background with a beautiful bordered geometric edge that runs down the front, the sleeves and around the hem. The playsuit is cut loose through the body and end in moderate-length shorts. It closes down the front with a zipper and a hook and eye at the top that you can wear all the way up or lower to show a little more skin. The design is unlined but does have a white cotton muslin interior border on both sides beside the zipper. The fabric is signed throughout. Labeled "EMILIO PUCCI Florence – Italy Made in Italy" and tagged a vintage size 12. The matching handbag features a beautiful unusual cube shape with pale pink leather handles and leather piped edges that lead to a leather covered button at the bottom. It is made of the same vivid coloured signature print terry cloth velvet fabric. The design has a diagonal running top zip closure with a lovely pale pink leather tassel detail and opens to a creme-white water-repellent synthetic interior housing a pale pink edged side slit pocket. The fabric is signed throughout. Labeled "EMILIO PUCCI Florence – Italy Made in Italy". These sets are extremely hard to come by and fantastic collector pieces! Both playsuit and handbag are in excellent vintage condition and appear to have worn very little. There is the lightest of colour bleeding to the velvet of the playsuit here and there but nothing that detracts or is noticeable once on. The inside is clean with minor staining at the top of the cotton muslin border. Not visible from outside. The velvet fabric and the leather handles of the handbag do not show any wear. Perhaps the lightest wear to the leather edging and the leather covered button on the bottom (see picture 17). Mentioned for accuracy only. By the mid-1960s, the international fashion press, enamored of his dazzling scarves and slithery dresses in sensuous psychedelic silk jersey, had dubbed Florentine designer Emilio Pucci the Prince of Prints. Less well known is that, starting in the early 1950s, Pucci applied his colorful, abstract patterns to static angular mediums such as ceramics, floors and furniture, imbuing them with movement, not to mention glamour. He was the first fashion designer to enter the lifestyle market, founding the successful brand that exists today.

Born in 1914 to one of Italy’s oldest noble families, Emilio Pucci, Marchese Pucci di Barsento, was a member of the postwar international jet set, hopping from beach to mountain to city. His fashion career began unexpectedly in 1947, when he created a revolutionary stretch ski outfit that was photographed on the Swiss slopes for Harper’s Bazaar.

Eschewing a life of aristocratic glamour, the self-taught Pucci opened a boutique on Capri dedicated to simple resort clothing (think capri pants) that evoked the Mediterranean’s undulating waves and refreshingly bright colors. At the time, luxury fashion was as constricted as a Dior cocktail dress, but the Swinging Sixties were on the horizon. Signed with what Vogue International editor Suzy Menkes calls a “handwritten ‘Emilio’ flourish” — a concept, she points out, as novel as that of designer ready-to-wear — his designs were soon seen on celebrities like Jackie Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe.

From the airline uniforms he created for Braniff in the 1960s to the emblem he crafted for the Apollo XV space mission in 1971, Pucci’s designs were visionary. In spite of his traditional roots (or because of them), the Prince of Prints was forward thinking and outward looking. Pucci put his signature flourish on patterns that were flexible — first for fashion, then for furnishings and objects. Whether on fabric or foam, shelves or sails, as he first explained some 70 years ago, the ornamental designs work in “continuous motion.” Venturing into nontraditional design partnerships, he laid the groundwork for a future brand, a classic legacy that his daughter Laudomia Pucci continues today.
