About

One of my favorite, though relatively unknown, designers from the 1960s-'70s is Ronald Amey, who created individualistic clothes using exquisite fabrics, interesting details, and couture-like craftsmanship. With his partner Joseph Burke, Amey designed for the label Burke Amey from 1959-1970, after which he created designs for several years under his eponymous label, then freelanced in the 1980s until his death in 1986.

This coat and dress ensemble features the attention to detail and shaping that distinguish Amey's designs. Of winter white wool, both coat and dress are fitted through their empire bodices by means of unusual contour seaming, which is outlined in black stitching, as is the collar. The skirts flare out to a wide A-line, with slash pockets in both, those on the coat hidden in the seams and those on the dress behind the pleated front panel. Hand sewn back zipper on dress, bound buttonholes, and white satin linings are further evidence of Amey's high quality production.
