Beginning in 1939, American Miriam Haskell asked her first designer since 1926 Frank Hess to sparingly use metal in their costume-jewelry collections during WWII while war materials were needed. So not unlike the Spring/Summer 2024 floral appliques designed by Balmain artistic director Olivier Rousteing, hand-crafted rose-motif plastic never looked more beautiful in the 20th Century than such eye-catching glossy creations as these ballet-pink clip earrings by Hess. In this reflective and sparkling pair of lightweight slightly asymmetrical climbers, shiny film-like rhodoid is hand-cut, layered in three dimensions for irregular shadows, and riveted with clear roses-montees to a thin silver metal frame, which replaced Hess' characteristic wired Russian-gilt brass frame while still resembling his earlier construction (see our other Haskell listing for an early double fur-clip chain lariat). It is an Alfred Philippe design, and the clear rhinestone version of the brooch & earrings was featured in Vogue in 1949. Measure: 1 inch long by 3/4 inches wide. Condition: Very good; some minor metal wear. This is a rarer color combination for these earrings; they are normally found with just pave clear rhinestones. Trifari is an American jewelry company founded in 1925 which sold costume jewelry to the middle to high end market. In 1930, Alfred Philippe, an immigrant from France, joined the company and became its lead designer. Philippe in his previous position in Paris had collaborated with Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, which influenced his designs for Trifari. In the 1930s, Trifari's jewelry was frequently used in Broadway productions. Their designs were also popular in Europe, owned by the Countess of Polignac as well as madame Lanvin's daughter and the director of Lanvin. Trifari also designed two sets of faux-pearl jewelry for Mamie Eisenhower. In 1955, Trifari won a landmark lawsuit protecting its copyrighted designs which were being copied by other costume jewelry companies. A similarly constructed and shaped pale-blue pair of climbers dated 1945 are in the renowned Barbara Berger museum-exhibited costume-jewelry collection.
