About the Item
LIMITED EDITION ILLUSTRATION BY ANTONIO LOPEZ (1943 - 1987)
DESIGNER... RALPH LAUREN
Original lithographic print from a limited edition of 500 printed in 1979 after which, the original plates were destroyed. This is # 344 /500. It was part of a portfolio created by the late great fashion illustrator, Antonio Lopez, honoring the 1979 COTY FASHION CRITICS AWARDS winners and nominees of which there were 14.
Only 500 of these portfolios were printed. Each containing 14 lithographic illustrations, with a page about each of the featured designers. "Antonio" is quoted on the cover sheet; "In each of these plates I tried to reflect the mood and spirit of both the designer and the clothes, relating each drawing to it's own historical art period."
I have seen these single Antonio Lopez Litho's selling from $500-$5000 each
The Coty American Fashion Critics' Awards (awarded 1943-1984) were first announced in January 1942 by the cosmetics and perfume company Coty, Inc. to promote and celebrate American fashion, and encourage design during the Second World War.[1][2] The first awards were presented in January 1943, with Norman Norell winning the award. The program was developed by the publicist and champion of American fashion, Eleanor Lambert with the assistance of the Mayor of New York, Fiorello H. La Guardia.[3][1] The awards were given solely to designers based in America, unlike the Neiman Marcus Fashion Awards.[4] Up until its discontinuation in 1985, the Coty Award was considered one of the most prestigious awards in the field of fashion. The womenswear awards are popularly known as Winnies; the menswear award which began in 1968 has no name. Repeat awards were the Return Award and the Hall of Fame award. Special Awards were also awarded to designers in specialist fields.
In 1984 Coty discontinued its awards, and the promotion of American Fashion was taken over by the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) with its anual Awards presentation. The seller of these litho's, Ricky Serbin has been a CFDA member for over 20 years.
About Antonio Lopez
He signed his works simply, "Antonio". No last name was necessary then or now. He was an amazing fashion illustrator who emerged onto the scene in the late 1960's and turned the staid fashion industry on it's ear with his flamboyant and edgy style. He was dubbed the Picasso of fashion illustration. His drawings appeared frequently in Vogue, Vanity, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Interview and The New York Times. His works were and still are exhibited in galleries all over the world. He died of AIDS in 1987
at the age of 44. Far too young, but in his short life, he changed the world of fashion forever!
His book, "Antonio's People", is a wonderful tribute to his friend and if you ever get a chance to pick up a copy you won't be disappointed. Antonio Lopez was a marvelous artist and contained in this book are numerous pictures of his art work and the people and events of his life. Among some of his famous friends were, Jerry Hall, whom he discovered, Grace Jones, Mick Jagger, Faye Dunaway, Paloma Picasso and Jackie Kennedy. To name a few.
Here is an opportunity for you to own one of his amazing works of art. The fact that it is a limited edition of only 500 is another good reason. And who knows how many are actually still around after almost 30 years.
This print is featuring Antonio's interpretation of fashion by designer RALPH LAUREN (1939- ).
Fashion Designer Ralph Lauren has become the epitome of classic fashion. With product lines such as Polo/Ralph Lauren for Men, Ralph Lauren for Women, Double RL, Ralph Lauren Home, and even Ralph Lauren paint, it makes us wonder who the man behind the label really is.
Born Ralph Lifshitz on October 14, 1939, in the Bronx, New York, Ralph Lauren has come a long way from his days of sharing a bedroom with two of his brothers. Growing up in a middle-class Jewish family, Ralph and his three older brothers were raised by his mother, while his artist father painted houses.
Ralph Lauren
Lauren's fashion sense was apparent at an early age when he would purchase expensive suits with the money he earned working at his after-school job. Although he knew he could find his clothes at a less expensive price, he made it a point to look stylish in his expensive threads -- and he has succeeded at looking cool in his attire since the age of 12.
It is Lauren's innovativeness, among many other traits of the model businessman, that has made him the founder, designer and chairman of a $900 million company. Not only was he the first fashion designer to have his own store, but he was the first to sell the whole lifestyle image that consumers flock to worldwide. Lauren sells much more than clothes and home furnishings; he sells a lifestyle image of sophistication, class and taste.
Measuring 15" by 11" this lithograph is in excellent condition .Will come with the onion skin page from the portfolio, about this fashion designer. Also copies of the pages in the portfolio that document it's authenticity will be included.
You will want to have this professionally framed with a museum type mounting to protect your investment and this is a great investment and in my opinion will only appreciate in value as time goes on. I am keeping one of these for myself for just that reason.
