Nora Ephron, in a talk with Leonard Lopate discussing her adaptation of our friend Ilene Beckerman’s, “Love, Loss, and What I Wore,” was asked about the story of the paper dress (not in Ilene’s book.) Ms. Ephron recalled, “Everybody decided to buy one or not to buy one. They were… so of the moment for one moment.” The dress in this story, purchased at Paraphernalia (also “of the moment”), meets an unsurprising natural demise.
Like solar flares that never fully quiet down, spikes in interest in paper dresses and resulting rabid collecting are occurring with increasing frequency. The advent of the internet provided a means to both research and collect the formerly languishing American cultural phenomenon that is the paper dress.
The Butterfinger bar's moment has persisted for over 80 years. As compared to the 1960s recipe, the current incarnation includes both different and additional ingredients, with new owner Nestle using corn syrup derived from GMO crops. Hmmm. Regardless of internal devolution, the packaging remains the same and the complementary colors of blue and orange still have calculated impact.
We like these best displayed suspended from a Lucite rod passed through the armscyes (and are happy to provide one.) Never worn, unfolded and lightly pressed for photographs only. Whether a collector of ephemera, fashion, advertising art, food collectibles, or all things Butterfinger, you’ll recognize that the “one moment” of this dress has yet to pass.
