Vintage Japanese Red and Green SHibori Dye Uchikake Kimono with Gold Chrysanthem

About

Absolutely striking! The Uchikake kimono is a formal kimono coat work worn only by brides or by stage performers. This particular piece could have served as either a wedding kimono or a performance kimono because of its color and motif. This uchikake features an organic shaped red and green shibori tie dye with a thin white line separating the two contrasting colors. The silk fabric has a subtle brocade consisting of horizontal diamonds with flower motifs. The uchikake is heavily embroidered with gold chrysanthemums and the occasional drifting peony over a loose cloud-like collection of square kanoko fawn-spots made in shibori. Chrysanthemums are heavily entrenched in Japanese culture, and are the symbol of the Japanese emperor and imperial household, as well as the official flower of the autumnal season. Peony flowers are often associated with youth and are common motifs in traditional garments work by young women. The kanoko fawn-spots are a popular shibori dye pattern, and are thought to resemble the spots on a baby deer. The lose and airy design on the kimono give it a floating, ethereal quality. The uchikake is quite long as it is meant to trail on the floor; the bottom hem is padded to help protect the fabric. The piece has partially unattached red lining. This uchikake is an absolute masterpiece and would look fantastic hanging on your wall or your shoulders! *All garments and accessories have been professionally cleaned and thoroughly checked before shipping. They are ready to wear upon arrival.
