17-19thC Antique Tibetan Altar, 8193
About the Item
17-19thC Antique Tibetan altar from the estate of the great comedian Gary Shandling. The main part of the altar looks to be quite early based on construction and the very intricate lacquer design work, the way the wood is cut, the detail and design work, and the overall look and feel of the piece. As with many of these early altars, parts have been replaced over the generations as they have either worn away or rotted away with time. Some replacements(such as the backplate behind the Shelf where the incense and candles would have gone) may be as recent as the early 20th century. Has the smell of Tibet, but not so much that I can't keep it next to my own bed. It is fragile so I have it velcroed together and to the wall. A rare and beautiful spiritual object with great provenance. Will need to be sent by freight. It comes apart into many pieces, as it was meant to be carried from place to place by nomadic people. Size- Altar 47" wide 23" deep x 75" tall – 8193.
