17th Century, Jade Disc 'Bi', Ming Dynasty, Art of China

$4,500

About

The term bi is applied to a circular jade disc with a proportionately small central hole. It appeared in the Liangzhu culture, circa 3000 BC, which is of an entirely plain and undecorated nature that did not carry special motif. A number of bi was buried with the deceased. It is believed that it is highly associated with one’s social status, but its exact function remains unknown. Until later in the Zhou dynasty and the period of Warring States, Rites of Zhou, authoritatively recorded the bi disc is one of the six ritual jades used to worship the heaven. An extraordinary bi was left undecorated but was prized for its material nature. The mottles stone varies in colour from a greyish green to a celadon colour. Art of China 17th century, Ming Dynasty ? Jade.
