19th Century Korean Stone Mortar

About

This handsome mortar was hand carved over 150 years ago in Korea out of a single block of stone and was used for husking rice. For many centuries Korea’s lush rice paddy-fields were divided into tiny plots of land that are cultivated largely by individual families. This provincial stone mortar shows some signs of wear that attest to its age and use grinding the outer husks off of grains of rice.
