Chinese Ming Dynasty 17th Century Glazed Terracotta Sancai Temple Roof Tile
About the Item
A Chinese Ming Dynasty period temple roof tile from the 17th century, with turquoise glaze, bird and flower motifs. Created in China during the Ming Dynasty which ruled from 1368 to 1644, this antique temple roof tile was made from molded terracotta and painted. The tile is rectangular in shape and is adorned with a beautiful long-tailed bird who is gracefully flying down to reach the petals of a gorgeous flower. They are both depicted in high-relief while the leaves' lower relief creates a perfect sense of depth. The plaque is painted in the Sancai, or “Three-colors” technique with green, blue and orange glazes, a technique popularized during the 8th century Tang Dynasty. The back is of course unfinished. With its bright colors, skillfully depicted motifs and small proportions, this Chinese Ming Dynasty period temple roof tile from the 17th century will make for a great decorative choice to highlight any home décor!.
