Early 19th Century, Bento Box with Grapes Design, Edo Period, Art of Japan

$2,900

About

It is found that Japanese tradition of preparing a packed meal can be traced back as early as 12th century. At first, the prepared convenient meal was for those who worked outside, for instance, fishermen. During Edo period, bento had turned to a status habit for travelers. In addition, it became a must-have item for outdoors social excursions, such as tea party. Due to the large demand from noble class, the concept of decorative lacquer bento box has evolved. Like many other sprinkled design, lacquer was first applied on the surface of bento box to form the patterns, then metal power was sprinkled over to make them visible. This bento box consists of four layers. The grapevine design made of two different metallics sprinkled powders with some larges vine leaves and grapes that were filled with gold power, while others were filled with brown power, which helps to create a contrast of colors. Due to the healthy growth of vines, the pattern came to symbolize luck and prosperity. This is an excellent piece demonstrates the art of Japanese lacquerware in high standard. Through utilizing different Japanese traditional patterns, the bento box is more than a design for ordinary usage but a visual enjoyment for its collector.
