Gandharan Carved Stone Relief Fragment of a Female Musician

An unusual relief panel of a female figure playing a lute. The demure figure stands on a pedestal, and is dressed in the Grecian style. She wears a loose fitting, pleated chiton, her hair plaited and worn up. A lute in her hands, under her amble bosom. A spray of leafy branches behind her head. Carved figures of females are unusual in Gandharan art. This figure may be a depiction of a celestial musician, as indicated by the pedestal she stands on. Another interpretation could be that she is a depiction of a yakshi, a kind of earth spirit, as indicated by the leafy branch behind her. This piece would originally have been a decorative or narrative element as part of an architectural structure. Mounted on a custom metal stand.
