Japanese Carved Statue of Buddha

About the Item

Japanese carved timber statue of seated Buddha, sitting atop a lotus throne. There are traces of the original lacquer and mineral pigments, including some gilding in the ear on the right side. The position of the hands, with the index finger of the lower hand being held by the upper hand, represents wisdom and insight that leads to enlightenment. The sculpture is made up of 3 pieces. The torso and head in one carved piece, the legs and lotus in another and then the base. Edo period, circa 18th century.
