Late 14th Century, Marble Prah Mae Torani, Pagan period, Art of Burma

About

The peculiarity of the Mahayana Buddhism known as the "Great Vehicle" was to have welcomed within it divine entities that were foreign to it. Thus it is not surprising to see in the pantheon of Burma - the high place of the Buddha's philosophy - this Chthonian Goddess represented often kneeling or, more rarely, standing, such as this graceful effigy in a swaying position and knees slightly Flexed. The Goddess is always represented with a long dripping hair, whose wave she expresses with both hands to water the earth. Here, the two hands of the Goddess are located at the level of the abdomen to give an impression of twisting of her mat. She is wearing a sarong covering the ankles and a jacket with a double pair of sleeves. The bottom of the jacket is attached to the fan arm giving a feeling of fluidity and thanks to the whole. The smiling face and the gaze fixed towards a distant horizon express a benevolent serenity. An attractive effigy, remarkable for the balance of proportions, the suppleness of the model, the attention paid to the workmanship, the sober elegance of the ornament: it is an excellent example of the harmonious realism characteristic of Burmese art. Art of Burma ? Late 14th century, Pagan Period style Marble Dimensions: Height 94 cm Width 25 cm.
