A spectacular pair of black glass vases each adorned with 13 large handmade gilded wooden lotus flowers and -leaves with refined details.
Such a set is known as ‘Jyôka’, and are typically positioned on or beside an altar in a Buddhist temple.
The lotus flowers are at different stages of their life (unfurled lotus leaves, buds and blooms) and symbolize the journey towards Buddhist enlightenment.
What sets this pair apart is its size; it is considerably larger than many similar sets, making it a rare find. As well as that it has such an extensive array of gilded flowers.
The flowers, which are detachable, allow for customizable arrangements within the vases.

Executed with black lacquer, holding a bronze hand mirror ( ekagami)
Configured with five smooth-running drawers of different Size. Two are equipped with slender "hirute"-shaped bail handles and three with decorative pull-rings.
The front-and backside featuring oval grips for easy transport.
Surmounted by a mirror frame in a shape reminiscent of a Shintô shrine torii-gate-
a twin-posted framework with a triangular crossbar flared in upswept Chinese-style gable ( Karahafu) endings.
Resting of the frame is the Japanese traditional handheld mirror with auspicious embossed design of wisteria ( fuji) and lovely patina.

Considering its age the set is in a very good condition with some traces of usage and wear conform age.

A remarkable Chinese life sized painted stucco head of a luohan, Song, Liao or Jin Dynasty, circa 11th century, China.
The amazingly life-like figure depicts a luohan (sometime spelled lohan), also known as an arhat, one of the original disciples of the Buddha. The elderly man has been molded in stucco with inset glass eyes and painted with idealized, if slightly exaggerated features.
The unidentified luohan sports a bald, or perhaps shaved, domed head above a bulging forehead, symbolizing his vast wisdom. The wrinkles in his furrowed brow, and creases around his eyes add to his realism. The learned man stares out wisely from deep set, heavily lidded inlaid glass eyes that catch the light.
The luohan has high cheekbones and a prominent jawline. His lips full and pursed as if about to speak. The corners of his mouth turned up ever so slightly in a faint smile, causing his gaunt cheeks to dimple charismatically. A series of dots above the upper lip indicate he may originally have sported a mustache of real hair.
This life sized head with extremely realistic features fits into a very narrow time frame of Chinese Buddhist art. Perhaps the most recognized group of large, finely molded Chinese luohan...

Christie’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September.
This sale was titled “The Scholar’s Vision: The Pal Family Collection”.
The painting was described as “A reverse glass painting of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh – India, Maharashtra, 19th Century.
The holy family seated on the floor, mother and child in the lap of Shiva, with a red background and blue borders. Opaque pigments and metal leaf on glass. 12 x 16 in. (30.4 x 40.6 cm.)
Exhibited:

It carried an Auction estimate of USD 2,500 to USD 3,500 and Sold for USD 2,500 (not including Buyers Premium).
