Northern Qi Dynasty Painted Pottery Striding Horse, 6th Century, China

About the Item

A magnificent Chinese painted pottery model of a striding caparisoned horse, Northern Qi Dynasty (550 to 577 AD), China, TL tested by Oxford Laboratories. The noble steed is portrayed mid-stride upon a trapezoidal base, legs extended at a graceful angle. The horse is caparisoned, and decked out in full finery. The saddle flares out dramatically, acting as a mud guard. Draped over the saddle is a riding blanket, tied elegantly at the ends, with edges of seafoam green. The tack beautifully rendered with studs and braids, supporting a large plume to the head, and a series of large boteh shaped bells or ornaments to the chest. The neck painted with a design of arrows. The mane of red ochre in an undulating pattern. The style of tack, ornaments, and headdress are all directly related to the Eurasian Steppe, and can be traced back to the Xianbei people. The Tuoba, a powerful Xianbei clan, founded the Northern Wei Dynasty in 386 AD. The short lived, yet highly prolific Northern Qi Dynasty (550 to 577) was the direct successor to the Northern Wei Dynasty, inheriting much of their culture and customs, including those of the Xianbei.

  • Chinese Painted Stucco Head of a Luohan, Song Dynasty, 11th Century, China
    Located in Austin, TX
A remarkable Chinese life sized painted stucco head of a luohan, Song, Liao or Jin Dynasty, circa 11th century, China. The amazingly life-like figure depicts a luohan (sometime spelled lohan), also known as an arhat, one of the original disciples of the Buddha. The elderly man has been molded in stucco with inset glass eyes and painted with idealized, if slightly exaggerated features. The unidentified luohan sports a bald, or perhaps shaved, domed head above a bulging forehead, symbolizing his vast wisdom. The wrinkles in his furrowed brow, and creases around his eyes add to his realism. The learned man stares out wisely from deep set, heavily lidded inlaid glass eyes that catch the light. The luohan has high cheekbones and a prominent jawline. His lips full and pursed as if about to speak. The corners of his mouth turned up ever so slightly in a faint smile, causing his gaunt cheeks to dimple charismatically. A series of dots above the upper lip indicate he may originally have sported a mustache of real hair. This life sized head with extremely realistic features fits into a very narrow time frame of Chinese Buddhist art. Perhaps the most recognized group of large, finely molded Chinese luohan...
