Rare set of 2 Japanese suits-of-armour, complete with 2 matching folding screens
Located in Amsterdam, NL
Important unique set of two suits-of-armour (yoroi), complete with two high six-panel screens, that belong together as is indicated by the used family crests (mon). Two crests are used, both belonging to the Nakagawa family of Oka Castle, Ôita prefecture on Kyûshû.
They are:
– the Nakagawa-kurusu, a circle depicting a Celtic-like cross through a ring.
The cross was originally a Christian symbol but after the ban on Christianity in Japan the use of a hidden cross in family crests could continue.
– the Nakagawa-kashiwa, two leaves of the Japanese Emperor Oak turned to each other (dakikashiwa mon).
The remarkable aspect of this ensemble is the presence of matching crests on both the yoroi and the accompanying folding screens. The kurusu and kashiwa crests adorning the yoroi are elegantly replicated on the screens, providing compelling evidence that these pieces form a harmonious and unified set. This exceptional cohesion between the armour and screens further enhances their artistic and historical value.
After the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) had interfered in the battle between the Lord of Bungo Province Ôtomo Yoshi-mune (1558-1605) and the Shimazu of Hyûga Province, he split the Bungo Province in a number of small fiefs and transferred in 1594 Nakagawa Hideshige (1570-1612) from Miki Castle
in the Harima Fief to Oka Castle in Kyûshû.
The Nakagawa family stayed in possession of Oka Castle till the abolishment of the military use of castles in 1873. In 1884 the Nakagawa family received the title of Count (a title in use till the abolishment of aristocracy in 1947).
After the Nakagawa’s left, the castle and the building soon dilapidated and is now known as Oka Castle Ruins. The castle is located in Taketa Village part of Taketa Town in Ôita Province on Kyûshû.
> Set of two tall byôbu (folding screens),
painted with large red jinmaku (camp enclosure curtain) on a gold leaf ground. The curtains show both crests of the Nakagawa family: one screen depicts two Nakagawa-kurusu crests next to a Nakagawa-kashi crest in the middle, and the other shows the symbols the other way round.

Total width 148.66 in/377.6 cm (2 x 25.35 in/64.4 cm, 4 x 24.48 in/62.2 cm); Height 72.63 in/184.5 cm.
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century), and maybe even older.

A Japanese black lacquered suit-of-armour (yoroi) completely laced with orange cords (kuro’urushinuri hi’ito odoshi nimai’dô’maru).
A thirty-two plate suji’bachi kabuto (helmet with raised ridges) with in front a maedate (fore crest) -with traces of gilding- in the shape of flames, resembling a mythical flaming bird flying down. The fukikaeshi (face guards) and the mabizashi (visor) have the Nakagawa-kashiwa crest in gold maki-e lacquer.

This antique Qing Dynasty nephrite jade pendant consists of a dragon with a pearl in its mouth. There is decorative etching on the body, and the head and mouth are well defined. White Jade Double Gourd Pendant, Qing Dynasty

This antique nephrite jade double gourd pendant is of the Qing Dynasty and has a fine texture with a glossy luster. It is primarily white with some slight inclusions in the left lower body but in bright light the pendant has a slight green tinge.
This lovely jade pendant consists of a smaller gourd on top of a larger one surrounded by vines with smaller hanging gourds. The vines create numerous holes from which to hang the pendant. There are also etchings of stars on the body of the gourds along with tendrils of curling vines.
In the Chinese culture, the double gourd is a symbol of fertility and good fortune. Gourds are also associated with Li Tie Guai, one of the eight immortals.

The front-and backside featuring oval grips for easy transport.
Surmounted by a mirror frame in a shape reminiscent of a Shintô shrine torii-gate-
a twin-posted framework with a triangular crossbar flared in upswept Chinese-style gable ( Karahafu) endings.
Resting of the frame is the Japanese traditional handheld mirror with auspicious embossed design of wisteria ( fuji) and lovely patina.

This stunning Tibetan telescopic horn or dungchen is from the late Qing Dynasty. The body is a warm brown that is smooth and adorned with chased and repoussé silvered metal details. It stands 15 inches when collapsed and 35.75 inches when extended. it measures 1.5 inches in diameter at the mouthpiece and 5" at the flared end. Each piece is expertly molded to fit into the next making it easy to secure in place when extending and release when collapsing, making it easy to travel with. Note the two rings at the flared end that are used for attaching a cord for carrying.

18th Century Qing Dynasty Fish Shaped Cricket Holder

Uniquely fabulous and highly unusual item for those seeking something different; this 18th century "cricket holder" from the Qing Dynasty is in the shape of a fish and is made of hand wrought metal, with nice detail and an open woven body which provided air to the cricket. A sophisticated clasp locking mechanism on the underneath of the fish kept the pet cricket contained in the caged holder. Obviously this was intact when someone at some point in time tried to remove whatever was inside by making a hole at the base of the tail to get it out (see image). This hand held cricket cage holder is in very nice and all original condition, save for the small hole; not fragile in any way; sturdy in structure with no repairs.

A beautiful "offering spiritual vessel" from the Yunnan province region in the ancient China. This was created in clay earthenware pottery during the Tang Dynasty period between 618 and 907 AD. Featuring molded patterns with incised and high reliefs of geometric figures.
The design consists of the bombe baluster-shaped jug and a lid with a spherical knob, which are decorated in relief with 8 panels representing the petals of the lotus flower and linear geometric designs.
Has a combined measures including the lid of 10.25 by 7.5 inches (26..03 x 19.05 Cm).

A beautiful "offering spiritual vessel" from the Yunnan province region in the ancient China. This rare vessel was created in red bronze during the Song Dynasty period. between 960/1279 AD.
This is one of the most unusual forms of red bronze jar. A large vessel, the sides are virtually perpendicular to the base. The stepped lid design is also among the more rare types. The predominant lid design among the Yunnan offering bronzes is the "wheel" pattern, with a few lids having the lotus design. This is also one of the few bronzes displaying clear riveting of a two-part vessel body, with the original twisted elements
Has a combined measures including the lid of 12.5 by 8.75 inches (31.75 x 22,23 Cm).
The Song Dynasty, was an imperial dynasty of China that began in 960 and lasted until 1279. The dynasty was founded by Emperor Tizu of Song following his usurpation of the throne of the later Zhou, ending the Five-Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. The Song often came into conflict with the contemporaneous Liao, Western Xia and Jin dynasties in northern China. A beautiful "offering spiritual vessel" from the Yunnan province region in the ancient China. This was created in clay earthenware pottery during the Tang Dynasty period between the 618 and 907 AD. Featuring finely molded patterns with incised and high reliefs of geometric figures.
The design consists of the bombe round-shaped jar and a lid with a conical knob, which are decorated in relief with one single layer of finely sculpted 8 lotus petals.
The lid is decorated with geometric figures and the knob in the lid is plain, topped by a form known as a vase.
Has a combined measures including the lid of 8.25 by 7 inches (20.95 x 17.78 Cm).
