An Exceptionally Fine Quality Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Vase of unusually large proportions, early Meiji period (1868-1912) and of Museum quality.
The main tapering oviform body with everted neck, with exquisite translucent rich dark shades of red enamel over an engraved and chased silver foil ground depicting bamboo leaf decoration. Top rim and base are mounted in bronze.
Mark at base as shown, see images.
Condition: Good condition with nice surface patination, one bruise loss to surface at shoulder area which shows where glass is absent, see image towards end.
Height: (an impressive) 12” (30.5cm). Diameter: (at widest area) 7” (18cm).

This is an exceptionally large English mid-19th century Victorian Ironstone Platter decorated in a beautifully detailed Japanese Imari pattern. The enameling is sharp with deep coloration and the overlaid gold is in very good original condition. The platter is marked "Stone China" on the reverse. The platter is in very good overall condition with normal patination and very minimal losses to the painted decoration. There is a bit of wear to the underside of the rim which does not detract from the value of the platter. Platers of this size are very uncommon and desirable. Stylish Assembled Set of eight Hand Painted Chinese Export Reticulated Pierced Blue and White Porcelain Vases of hexagonal and square outline, sometimes referred to as cricket pots or cages, together with a very unusual Chinese lidded inkwell with similar decoration. Each finely hand decorated on all outer panels depicting flowers and scrolling detail. These pieces are typically unmarked.

Japanese pottery dates back at least 13,000 years to the Jōmon period. Pieces from the Late Jōmon era display a rope-cord pattern encircling a pot or jug. During the Muromachi period, potters created simple bowls and utensils frequently used in tea ceremonies and were made as both functional and aesthetic objects.
Ceramics made during Japan’s Meiji period, from 1868 to 1912, reflected an explosion of artistic expression propelled by new access to international trade. Details became more intricate and refined, and colors were enhanced with new glazing practices.
Chinese porcelain, meanwhile, is often identified by its shape. Each reign and dynasty had specific shapes and styles that were encouraged by the imperial ruler. During the Song dynasty, for instance, there were four dominant types of ceramic vase shapes: plum-shaped, pear-shaped, cong-shaped (tall and square) and double-gourd.
Chinese ceramics that were made during the Qing dynasty were demonstrative of an expanded artistic expression, with more delicate shapes and a focus on intricate detailing. The shapes of ceramics from this era are thinner, taller and have subtle features like a gentle flare, such as on the mallet-shaped vase.
Later, the 17th- and 18th-century interior design trend of chinoiserie brought Asian paintings and screens, textiles and other art and furniture from the continent into many European homes.
