Chinese Blue Flambe Glazed Hu Vase, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century, China
About the Item
An unusual and spectacular Chinese monochrome blue flambé-glazed hu form porcelain vase, Qing Dynasty, 19th century, China.
The hu vase is heavily potted with elegant proportions. Set on a short recessed foot, the rounded pear shaped body rises upwards at a slight taper, constricting ever so slightly at the wide neck before modestly flaring out at the mouth.
While the form is elegant and restrained, the glaze is anything but. We are describing the glaze as a flambé, as that is what is most resembles. However, we believe it is actually a failed attempt at a peachbloom. The bottom and interior of the vase give an indication of what the glaze could have or should have been, with a deep pink peach ground flecked and spotted with green.
Flambé glazes are generally runny and streaky, with wild variations in color. This glaze is best described as "speckled", bearing some resemblance to "oil spot" and "robbin's egg" glazes as well.
The shape of the vase is based on an ancient form, known as a hu. Originally used as a wine vessel, the hu form was memorialized in later Chinese bronzes and porcelains as a vase form.
