About the Item
A small and finely decorated Japanese Satsuma tripod incense burner (koro), signed Kyozan, Meiji period, circa 1900, Japan.
The censer, koro, with a compressed body supported by three elegantly splayed legs. A pair of handles and a pierced cover complete the incense burner.
The body decorated with a densely patterned black and gilt ground with chrysanthemum. Two large fan-shaped reserves to either side. One side with a group of women dressed in sumptuous kimono and pursuing the scholarly arts, while the other side features a group of armored samurai at rest. Other reserves feature birds and butterflies.
The underside of the koro and legs with raised gilt arabesque designs. A two character signature in gilt within a black ground cartouche, possibly reading "Kyozan".
