Ceramic Vase with Black Glaze Khmer Angkor Period

About the Item

Ceramic vase with black glaze Khmer Angkor Period On offer is a stoneware ceramic vase with black iron glaze from Khmer Kingdom (now Cambodia) dated to Angkor period circa 12th century. The vase is constructed in a very elegant form derived from Indian continent with a flared petal like mouth lined with molded ridges. Geometrical incised patterns circle the shoulder. Circular lines are also heavily featured at the transitioning area between the neck and body and body and feet, rendering the piece a rather modern and architectonic appearance. The dark brown to black glaze was applied over the body except close to the foot, where a reddish slip was applied on the gray clay. Typical of Angkor period, the vase is a great example of the pinnacle of Khmer ceramic development. The indigenous ceramic production ceased after 14th century due to the influx of superior import ceramics and porcelain from China. The technique of the black glaze was therefore lost. Yet the black pottery from Angkor period stands out from the Southeast Asian ceramics due to its absolutely unique form and decoration that is simple yet sophisticated, almost strangely modern. The historical use of these vases are suggested (though by no means definitely) to be from religious rituals to daily storage for liquor wine and fish sauce. The more elaborate ones such as this piece was more likely with a ritual purpose. Provenance is available to the buyer only. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Glaze exhibits significant patina that is beautiful and expected. Some detectable surface wear such as minor scratches and scrapes, one minor scrapes on the rim of the base exposing the gray paste. All as shown.
