Chinese Porcelain Solifleur Vase, Qing-Style Prunus Design, Circa 1900
About the Item
This small Chinese porcelain solifleur vase dates to around the 1900s and is executed in a Qing-style blue and white palette. The vase is decorated with the prunus cracked ice pattern, a well-established decorative motif associated with late Qing porcelain.
The form is bottle-shaped, with a rounded, bulbous base rising to a slender, tapered neck. The proportions are carefully balanced, lending the piece a refined verticality despite its modest scale. The surface is fully glazed, with the decoration applied in cobalt blue against a white underglaze ground.
The prunus decoration is hand painted, with flowering branches set against a network of sharp transfer geometric lines. These fine reserves expose the white porcelain beneath the blue ground, creating the visual effect known as “cracked ice.” The contrast between the dense cobalt areas and the white underglaze gives the surface depth and a rhythmic pattern across the body of the vase. The vase is unsigned.
Condition is good for its age and use. There are no chips, cracks, or structural damage. Some minor superficial surface wear is present on the base, consistent with age and handling.
The vase measures approximately 14.5 cm in height with a diameter of 7.5 cm (approximately 5.7 inches high and 3 inches in diameter). It is well suited for use as a solifleur, displaying a single stem, or as a small decorative accent within a porcelain or Asian ceramics collection.
