Chinese Squared Famille Rose Ginger Jar with Ritual Vessels, c. 1900

About the Item

Beautifully commemorated on this squared ginger jar, tripod censers and bronze ritual vessels have been used for thousands of years in Chinese culture as a part of funeral rites and prayer offerings. This late Qing-dynasty jar pays colorful tribute to these traditional vessels in style of famille rose ware. Sometimes referred to as "yangcai" or "foreign colors," the famille rose style emerged during the 18th century and employs pastel palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favors roses and pinks. Depicted here as vases bearing peonies and plum blossoms, the ancient vessels on this jar are painted with decorative meanders and dense patterns to recreate the elaborate surface treatments typical of Chinese bronzes. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer. Additional Dimensions: Diameter of opening: 3" Base: 4.5" W x 4.5" D.
