Judgment of Paris Chinese Export Plate
A rare Chinese export plate showing the Judgment of Paris. The delicately painted figures derive from a painting by Jean Paul Rubens. The plate was made during the Qianlong Reign, circa 1750. The scene shows Rubens' version of idealized feminine beauty, with the goddesses Venus, Minerva and Juno on one side and Paris on the other side. Charged by Jupiter to pick the most beautiful of the three Paris selects Venus and awards her the golden apple. The rim of the plate is decorated with a rose red flower band. Dimensions: 9 inches diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $1800 Background This dish was made exclusively for the European market based on the well known Greek story from Homer, in which Paris, the son of the King of Troy had to make a choice between a number of Goddesses to decide which one of them was the most beautiful. According to Greek and Roman mythology the act of picking Venus as the most beautiful of the three goddesses eventually started the Trojan war.
