Korean Goryeo Celadon Glazed Bottle Vase with Kintsugi Repair, 12th Century
About the Item
A sublime Korean celadon glazed cup mouth bottle vase, Goryeo Dynasty, 12th century, Korea.
The elegant bottle vase, originally used to serve wine, features a gorgeous Goryeo celadon glaze. The body of baluster form, with a notable lean, plainly decorated with simple, incised lines. The tall neck, also askew, rises to an elegant cup mouth.
The cup mouth with a small kintsugi (gold lacquer) repair to the rim, adding to the vase's wabi-sabi aesthetic.
The celadon of two distinct shades, both very typical of Goryeo celadon ceramics. One side of a more olive toned celadon, the other with a gray green hue. Both sides feature alluring iron spotting.
An overall gorgeous vase with great personality.
Kintsugi is the the Japanese art of repairing broken or damaged ceramics using lacquer mixed with gold dust. It is usually used on especially cherished objects, drawing attention to the beauty of the break or chip. The philosophy of kintsugi repairs is that the damage is part of the piece's history, and should be celebrated and highlighted rather than hidden.
