Dating from the prewar Showa period of circa 1960, these egg-shaped scroll weights are hand painted in the traditional Kutani style. Each piece bears the mark of Kutani (??) on the reverse side. Traditional Japanese rooms are often decorated with scrolls. A “fuchin” or scroll weight is a pair of tasseled weights made of porcelain or stone that is hung on the scroll's bottom end roller to straighten the scroll and steady it in the breeze.
